The Conservation and Education Centre at the former Bristol Zoo Gardens site remains open to students.

You will have private access to the zoo grounds during lectures, to carry out your observations and data collection, but as more animals are moved, this will gradually be carried out at the Bristol Zoo Project. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Course Description
Earn as you learn, work in an educational setting for 2.5 days
Study at campus one afternoon/evening per week

The BA (Hons) Education and Learning is a one year top-up Level 6 course, for those students who have already achieved a Foundation Degree or a HND in a relevant subject. This degree aims to provide students with a robust knowledge of the theories and practices in educational contexts.

Growing up, I always wanted to work with children and probably become a teacher. At the age of 36, I knew it was the right time for the next stage in my career. At first, I was extremely nervous as education was never a strong point in my younger years, and the thought of going back was terrifying, but the amazing support you are surrounded by from lectures, peers and the Disability Coordinator made the learning journey a lot more pleasant. The knowledge you gain from each individual is a really beneficial part of anyone’s journey, and you will be pleasantly surprised at just how much it all helps with not just your work for the course but also your job or placement. Whether you are good with time management or not you will soon learn to be, and this is important in being successful during your time here. For myself finding the balance between my family, full-time job, and university took a while, but you can do it; you just have to remember to be patient and kind to yourself and remember there are always people around you that can help and maybe feeling the same or have felt the same at some point in their life. Never be ashamed or compare yourself to others, as we are all individuals and learn in different ways. Being dyslexic was a barrier for me, but with the right strategies in place and the amazing support you have access to from the Disability Coordinator and your lectures, you will definitely find your stride in what is best suited to you. This course has really changed my life for the best, from growing confidence to really believing in myself and my own abilities. If you have the dream of achieving your degree, you really can do it.

Contemporary Curriculum Design

This module aims to develop your awareness of the various approaches to curriculum design at different points in education. You will apply these to your own working practice and plan an innovative unit of work that supports some learners within your current working context. The future of education will be considered in light of societal and individual expectations and requirements of education. Sustainability and global politics will also be analysed in relation to curriculum design and the role education and educational institutions play

Psychology in Education

This module provides an opportunity for you to critically examine and evaluate a range of psychological theories, in light of their application within educational contexts, including those from primary to higher education. Whilst relating theory to the design and maintenance of practice and policy, you will be enabled to reflect on your own and others educational experiences.

Developing Health for Life

Given the stressful lives that modern day families live, health for life is a very important project for all. This endeavour starts in the early years, as it has been shown that early relationships matter in the development of resilience. You will learn in more detail what resilience means, why this is important in relation to the topic, as well as the biological, environmental and sociological factors that can influence physical and mental well-being. You will have a chance to examine current neuroscientific and other research findings in order to be able to evaluate examples from developmentally appropriate practice that help children and families to promote health for life. A final takeaway message of this module is that a shared commitment towards health for life between children, parents/carers, practitioners and students, is inevitable.

This module provides you with an opportunity to engage in educational research by conducting your own research in an area of interest. You will be supported through the process, beginning with the creation of your research proposal. This is an exciting module which requires independent and critical thinking. The material in this module will be delivered in taught sessions and individual tutorials which enhance your research skills and develop your knowledge of research and its importance in education. Initially you will devise a research proposal whilst learning about the research process. You will then become an autonomous thinker through individual tutorial support whilst conducting your research and analysing the data.
